The word Spartan conjures up the vivid history of the battle of Thermopylae, a story of enormous courage in the face of devastating odds. The Spartans were a tough breed, trained from childhood in the art of war and inured to most privations, both mental and physical. Engaging them at close quarters was something to be feared and avoided, as their famous Kopis swords struck off arms and legs like a scythe in a wheat field! Designed by Andrew Demko, the Cold Steel Spartan™ is a folding Kopis scaled down to accommodate the demands of a tamer, more sophisticated world. The 4 1/2" blade evokes the classic Kopis of the ancients with its characteristic recurved edge, big belly and sharp, acute point. It's hollow ground from Japanese AUS 8A stainless and has some similarities with a Kukri. Like the Kukri, the Spartan™ always presents its edge at an angle to the material being cut to produce a deep sheering effect. However, since its point is narrower and more acute than most Kukri blades, it stabs almost as well as it cuts. The Spartan™ also echoes the ancient Kopis in its handle. It's designed to help the hand resist the pull of centrifugal force and to retard forward momentum, when stabbing, or backward movement, when hammering or smashing with its pommel. Injection molded out of Grivory with steel liners for strength, it’s heavily contoured for comfort and features irregular fluting and a heavily textured surface finish for an exceptionally effective grip.

The Spartan™ has dual pocket clips to assure ambidextrous carry and for quick draw opening, it features a thumb plate that can be used to open the knife like a conventional "one handed opener" or be snagged on the edge of a pocket during the draw stroke and opened automatically. Additionally, the Spartan™ incorporates our Tri-Ad™ locking mechanism, which has proven, under torture testing to be almost impervious to stress, strain and shock. It's almost impossible to overcome and offers a huge margin of safety not found in our competitor’s folders.

The Spartan is one tough knife. I wish Cold Steel would make a fixed blade version maybe with a 5 inch blade. It would be fantastic for hikers and campers and would double as a virtual "short sword" in a self defense situation. They could call it the Hoplite or the Argonaut or some other great Greek name. Even so, the Spartan folder is the one folder I would want in my hand if my life was on the line and a folder was all I had. Excellent knife!

Great folding Tactical Knife for Survival. It has an awesome Blade that is 4mm thick. The only gripe I have is that the handle design is hard to draw quickly. This is why I would not choose this one for SD, but it's a great Utility and Survival Tactical Folder.

It's built like a tank, like the big Rajah II, it's heavy and bulky. This knife was built for heavy chores! If you need a super strong and heavy duty survival folder, this one is for you... Very well made. I just wish that Cold Steel would offer more of their lines with "Polished" blades.

Besides, the Spartan is an AWESOME BLADE that all Manual Tactical Folder Lovers should own...

Easily among the best knives I own, it's now become my everyday carry. It's held up to every abuse I've thrown at it whether that's cutting branches, meat, or even bailing wire.

Well you've obviously convinced me since I bought this knife. No complaints, it is everything you advertised it as. Not a complaint but an observation...this is a big, heavy, tough knife. You don't try to pretend it's anything else. It just is what it is.
