The Special Forces Shovel is modeled after the original Soviet Spetznaz shovel. The Spetznaz soldiers made up the most elite unit in the Soviet Army. The U.S. equivalent would be our Green Berets. The shovel head and socket are forged from medium carbon steel, then heat treated for maximum strength. The edges come sharpened to a utility/axe edge that can easily be improved to razor sharpness.

The Special Forces Shovel comes complete with a specially made Cor-Ex sheath. The sheath features an extra wide belt loop. The sheath and the shovel are available for sale as a stand alone items.

These shovels are excellent, high quality tools. I would recommend these for pretty much anyone who needs a nearly indestructible shovel (with a few modifications). My only complaint is that the handles do not stand up as well as the heads, I have broken three of them chopping. These handles can be quite easily replaced with a solid polyethylene rod from McMaster-Carr (part number 8701K46) It requires shaping one end into a cone to fit into the shovel socket, of course, but that is easily done with a belt sander or grinding wheel. After I had fitted the handle, I coated it with rubberized truck bed liner for a better grip, and that handle has not broken or even budged after very rigorous testing and years of use.

This shovel is tough and works superbly. Chops through big roots, and some rocks even, quickly and with no obvious damage. Cold Steel should design a slightly larger "jeep shovel kit version".

I love this thing, it's a new staple for any bug-out-bag recommendation I make to my friends. It's easily slung from a belt, simple to fit your own custom length handles for specific tasks, and works great as an all around tool when camping.

I took a dowel rod that was the same diameter as the head mount and cut it down to shape. Made a great full-sized shovel; also made a great pole-arm. I've seen a few video reviews where people have used different shaped branches to turn it into a hoe as well.

For the short grip, I wrapped the handle in sports tape (like baseball bats and hockey sticks use) and just because any survival tool needs some para-cord attached to it, I wrapped the metal neck of the head. Many people drill a hole through the end and attach a lanyard to it. Finally, I've seen people drill holes on the blade up near the outer sides of the foot bend, then tie a rope (or your para-cord wrap) through each side and use it as a lifting rope to make digging less back breaking.

Definitely get the Sheath, this things to sharp not to keep it covered.

Makes a great gift idea, all of your friends would be better off keeping one of these in the trunk of their car, just in case.

I Really like this shovel. Great for digging around a tire when your vehicle is stuck in the snow or mud. And it fits in the vehicle better. very useful for camping. I didn't get the sheath for it when i bought it. Whereabouts can i get a sheath?
