If you were suddenly castaway on a desert island or stranded in the wilderness or a jungle, what's the one tool you would want at your side? The answer is a good machete. You see the machete, over the last three centuries, has proven to be the ultimate outdoor and survival tool. It will cut, chop, slash, hack, split, scrape, scoop, hammer, dig, crush, carve, whittle, crack or smash just about anything you can put in front of it. The machete also makes a deadly improvised weapon. It can be used to kill both fish and game and will gut, scale, filet, skin, quarter, and butcher them for the table as well. And when you look at its meager cost, it's got to be one of the best bargains for hard earned cash in the world. In fact it's so cheap and useful that even the poorest peasant in South America or tribesman in Africa invariably owns one and counts on it as one of his most precious possessions.

These blades are made out of 1055 Carbon Steel with a tough spring temper and are surfaced with a black, baked-on anti-rust finish. Each Cold Steel® machete comes with a good utility edge which, with just a little work, can be made hair shaving sharp. The tough, Polypropylene handles of our machetes are designed to provide a comfortable secure grip, and they are rugged enough to resist chipping, cracking or breaking, so they last practically forever.

There's no single edged weapon that we can think of that can out-chop or out-cut a good Kukri. It's true that the best Kukris, like our LTC and Gurkha models, can be somewhat expensive. While those "thoroughbreds" perform extraordinarily well for the money that they cost, it sometimes seems that what's required is a good, inexpensive, "workhorse" model. Our Kukri Machetes are those workhorses. They are available in two sizes, one has a thirteen inch blade and the other, our new "Magnum" model has a whopping seventeen inch blade. Both are ready to plow through the toughest chores life can dish out. Each features the distinctive weight-forward balance of our "top-of-the-line" models, and always present their edge on an angle so they're guaranteed to "bite" deep with every stroke. Additionally, they come complete with a sturdy Cor-Ex sheath! They're a solid value, ready for long, hard work.

First thing's first - this is a kukri shaped machete, and not a kukri. Please keep this in mind and remember that while it's one of the best machete shapes for chopping, it will not chop half as well as Cold Steel's Gurkha Kukri, or a traditional Nepalese kukri. This is because this is a machete. Machetes are thin, light and fast, as Lynn and friends will tell you in "The Fighting Machete" (great DVD set by the way).

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way...

THIS THING IS AWESOME. The ultimate nightmare of branches, vines and bushes everywhere, not to mention two and four-legged predators. This thing is MEAN! I hope Cold Steel never discontinues this, ever.

The one and only negative thing I have to say about this machete is that the edge, like all Cold Steel machetes I've bought (I have four) came with a disturbingly bad edge. This was not up to the quality standards I am used to from Cold Steel, who in my experience really does make the strongest and (some of) the sharpest knives, with great fit and finish and overall superb quality. This is the only thing preventing me from giving this 5 stars. However, this problem was easily fixed with a Lansky puck and a file. What I will say is that the anti-rust coating should never have been applied to the edge.

The handle is great. Great shape, feels good in hand. Cold Steel knows how to make an ergonomic handle, let me tell you. No complaints there, but I do recommend you use gloves with this and all your other hard use woods tools.

The sheath is acceptable. Quality materials and workmanship, but because it requires two straps it's a little inconvenient to use in an emergency situation. I wouldn't bother keeping it in the sheath if you expect to need to use it in emergency defensive situations.

Great work, Cold Steel! Work on those factory edges on your machetes and these will be perfect!

i have owned one of these beauties for the last 4 years and it has been on every hunting/camping trip i have been on, it has chopped and battoned more wood than any axe i have ever owned, dispatched its fair share of ferel pigs and goats and still has a fine edge for shaving sticks for fire starters. i would not be without mine for any reason and it is the first thing i pack for any trip.

a good tip for this is to use an axe grind on the main part of the blade for strength and longevity and a finer edge on the 3-4 inches closest to the handle for the more delicate tasks.

the only gripe is the sheath is a little lackng but i had a leather sheath made by a decent leather goods maker and now it is the envy of all my hunting buddies

What an AMAZING weapon and tool. It picked this up just today at a gun show. Very balanced, very strong, and very sharp. I would recommend this to ANYONE who needs a machete.

I have owned one of these machetes for two years. What I love about it and cold steel is that it is a good design made cheaply and sturdily. The nylon sheath is very durable with the exception of the belt loop that I had to sew back on. The small size of this Machete is perfect for jobs in hard to reach places. All in all an excellent tool

Excellent knife. Very well balance and weighted. I was going to buy one for my Bug-Out-Bag and decided to buy two to be cool like the zombie movies (practicing with the sheaths on and took the skin off one of my knuckles). It will take a lot of practice to even begin to do what they do in the movies. Anyway, excellent knife for the bag. One thing to be aware of, is that if wearing on the left side the snap can catch on things and become unsnapped, allowing the knife to fall out.
