Cold Steel is proud to breathe new life into a classic WWII knife called the Smatchet.

Famed for its countless exploits in the trenches, the rubble-strewn streets and the thick jungle, it carved out a reputation for ferocious effectiveness that still echoes today.

A knife that gained much of its notoriety in the hellish melee of trench warfare, the Smatchet was all about function. Its flat, heavy blade struck fear into the enemy and provided a distinct psychological edge to the wielder. Just holding a Smatchet instilled confidence and a grim determination for getting the job done. Its very name became a byword for guts, glory and bravery.

Our modern interpretation of this true military classic features the same instantly recognizable broad spear point and false edge with the addition of a strong steel reinforced guard and rugged weather-proof handle with a generous lanyard hole in its contoured, comfortable and virtually unbreakable polypropylene handle.

A formidable tool that can only be described as part machete, part short sword, our Smatchet is fully sharpened and coated with a rust resistant matte finish that is baked onto the 1055 Carbon Steel blade for extra durability.

Affordable, strong and reliable, the Smatchet is made to survive.

When you feel the comforting heft of the Smatchet hanging from your belt or pack in its Cor-Ex™ sheath you will know the confidence that comes from having a knife that can handle the very worst that the world has to throw at you.

Still putting it through its final paces as my camping knife (but being a Cold Steel piece I have no doubt it will surpass expectation). The only worry I had coming into it was the grip not being textured as I have arthritic hands; but it hasn't been an issue so far this fall or winter. I love that it's durable enough for me to jab into a tree and use as a step to climb from.

Finally it's in my hands - and it already proved to be one of my most versatile and useful big knives.
To me the size is right, as is the weight. The grip has the right shape and dimensions. It is fun from the moment you draw it - one can hear a singing noise when it's drawn, and instantly senses its handyness.
The right stuff for everyone who doesn't want to carry along a long machete.
I'm pretty sure that the Smatchet will find it's community of fans.

I've been waiting for a long time for Cold Steel to bring this out. Fine job, I will definitely be buying it as soon as available.

I am a medically retired Georgia deputy. I started carrying Cold Steel knives in the early 80's. Every deputy in the S.O. carried Cold Steel. Twice the old, 'Terminator' push-dagger potentially saved my life during felony take downs. I ALWAYS carry at least one Cold Steel product, usually two. Have for almost 35 years.

After being run over by a suspect during a drug operation and retired, I walk with the wonderful Irish Blackthorn. As SgtMjr. Plumley said in, "We Were Soldiers" everything else were, "wussies". This is my 'American Express' - 'Never Leave Home Without It'. This Cold Steel product has stopped one crow-bar armed, armed-robbery with the felon stopping at the hospital with a broken jaw and several missing teeth on his way to jail.

Lastly, the 'Smatchet' is OUTSTANDING. I thought it would be similar in uses as my Kukri machete. The handling characteristic are different as well as uses. This handles more like a big knife than a chopping tool. Short enough to be handy, heavy enough to be useful, sharp enough to use in the kitchen, and mean enough to, "beard the lion in his den".

There are Cold Steel products....and whatever else.

This is a classic British battle implement - and Cold Steel is the only builder currently producing these blades. Hefty without being unweildy, this is a top-notch defence item, though it is sturdy enough to endure any sort of bushwork and balanced enough to move through martial arts moves with ease. I am a former naval officer who has been looking for a Smatchet for years - thank you, CS, for rolling out this item.
