Cold steel is a practical representative, the size and volume of this knife is very suitable for carrying around, the design of the hilt is ergonomic, I often use it to deal with game, every time I go camping, I will take him with me, he is my loyal and reliable partner, a good knife can be used for a lifetime!
This knife was purchased for me years ago by my father as my first hunting knife, back when it was called the "Hunter II". This is quite simply the most utilitarian knife I own. It can do anything, and I wear as my everyday carry. The blade is thick and robust, perfect for prying, the steel is really high quality and holds an edge. The full bodied blade allows it to be used as an eating utensil if needed, and the non slip handle makes for a firm grip when your hands are wet. I would buy this blade over any other in a heartbeat.
I bought this for an Elk hunt in Montana and found it to be a great all-around knife for outdoor activities. The shape (ample belly) works beautifully for skinning and dressing out game, but the thickness of the spine is what makes this knife outstanding for camping. The steel is tough enough to withstand much abuse. I have used it to remove 3/4-1" branches of dried wood for kindling when I forgot my camp axe and it remained sharp as ever, no nicks after hacking on that hard dense wood. I just saw a video review of a Swedish knife that looks identical to this Cold Steel Master Hunter where they dug a hole with it and stabbed an empty can to test the tip strength. I have opened steel cans with my Master Hunter and was impressed with the ability to do so with good precision almost as easily as with a folder with a can opener (Boy Scout knives, or a GI can opener). I love the new Kydex sheath, but my old Cordura sheath works just fine.
Great knife, small...9 inches overall and 4.5 inch blade...a real utility knife. The blade is not a traditional skinning knife...got those. I was looking for an all around knife for camping, hiking, picnics...this is it (I have breasted out Canada Geese with this knife as well). Throw in your bag and go...you are ready for anything. I have been to 4 continents with this knife and wouldn't take anything else.
I love this knife! Just the right size for field dressing deer and pronghorn. Easily handles common camp and hunting knife tasks to include food preparation and game processing. The handle is comfortable and tactile, providing an excellent grip with or without gloves, and even if wet. The San Mai III blade was beautifully finished in a semi-polish, and the edge arrived razor sharp from the factory. Sheath was adequate in all respects. If I was buying a new one, I'd probably get the CPM 3-V because properly heat treated, it is one of the very best knife steels available and will likely be even more durable and hold an edge even better than any stainless steel. If this knife fits your hand comfortably, then I fully recommend the Cold Steel Master Hunter.

I have owned and used several Cold Steel knives over the last 30 years and their Master Hunter model is one of my favorites. I consider the size, shape, and ergonomics to be near perfect! The handle is a very good non-slip Kraton, which really helps when your hands are wet with blood, rain, or sweat. The 4.5" blade is just right for gutting, skinning, and processing a variety of game species. I used mine on deer, pronghorn, and wild boar and was completely satisfied with the sharpness and edge retention of the San Mai III blade. I don't know if my older model used Carbon-5, VG-1 or AUS-8 for the middle layer which formed the cutting edge, but I could get through processing an animal before needing to re sharpen the blade. High quality tools make a job easier, safer, and produce better results. The Cold Steel Master Hunter is a great hunting knife!
