Must-Have Gear for Turkey or Deer Camp

Must-Have Gear for Turkey or Deer Camp

Posted by Heath Wood on Apr 10th 2025

A successful turkey or deer camp isn’t just about scouting and strategy; it’s also about having the right gear to make the experience smooth, efficient, and enjoyable.

As a teenager, I remember joining my father on a men’s turkey camp where two of his coworkers and their sons joined us for the weekend. The turkey hunting was rewarding, and the food was hearty and satisfying. However, when it came time to return to camp after a morning in the woods, we had to remember Missouri’s hunting regulations, which required us to stop hunting by 1:00 p.m. That day brought colder-than-expected temperatures, and we were all soaked from the morning hunt. The thought of wearing damp clothes early the following day wasn’t appealing. We knew we needed a fire to dry our gear, but gathering firewood seemed challenging without saws, axes, or nearby cabins or houses. After brainstorming, someone remembered a portable fold-out saw tucked away in one of our turkey vests. It wasn’t as quick as a gas-powered chainsaw, but it did the job. We managed to cut enough dry wood to get a good fire going. When we crawled into our warm sleeping bags that night, our boots and camo clothes were dry and ready for the next day’s hunt. After that experience, we ensured never to head out on a camping trip without the essentials, especially a good camp axe or saw.

Whether setting up a long-term hunting camp or heading out for a weekend trip, having high-quality tools can make all the difference. Here are some must-have pieces of gear for your next hunting camp that will keep everyone happy and make hunting more enjoyable.

Cold Steel Fixed Blade Hunting Kit

A reliable knife is one of the most important tools at any hunting camp. The Cold Steel Fixed Blade Hunting Kit provides a versatile set of blades designed for field dressing, skinning, and quartering game. Yet, that’s not all it can do. These knives can also be used around camp without needing to pack extra gear, which minimizes the amount of equipment at hunting camp. With razor-sharp stainless-steel blades, an ergonomic grip, and a durable sheath, this kit ensures you can process your harvest efficiently and safely. Whether breaking down a whitetail in the field or breasting out a gobbler, this set has the tools to get the job done right, allowing that day’s harvest to be enjoyed at camp. Nothing is better than a fresh, warm meal taken that day.

Cold Steel AXE Gang Hatchet

Having a quality hatchet is invaluable when setting up camp. The Cold Steel AXE Gang Hatchet is inspired by traditional Chinese hatchets but is built tough for real-world use, making it an ideal camp hatchet. After being unable to gather wood for our turkey camp, I have kept my Cold Steel hatchet in a rubber tote where I store my camping essentials. Whether splitting firewood, driving in tent stakes, or clearing brush, this rugged tool provides the chopping power you need. With a sturdy wooden handle and a well-balanced design, it’s easy to wield for camp chores. Another great option would be the SOG Knives Camp Axe, which features an OD handle and a black stonewashed blade. Designed for hammering and chopping, this compact axe makes a great outdoor tool. It’s lightweight and small, making it easy to transport and stow. Keep it as a quick and versatile tool for starting fires, clearing campsites, and hammering tent stakes.

Muddy Outdoors Soft Cooler

A reliable cooler keeps food and drinks cold throughout the hunting trip. The Muddy Outdoors Soft Cooler is perfect for packing meals, temporarily storing harvested game meat like a fresh turkey breast, or keeping your beverages ice-cold after a long day in the woods. Its durable construction and heavy-duty insulation ensure that ice lasts longer, while its lightweight design makes it easy to transport to and from camp. Whether you’re sitting around the fire after a successful hunt or packing out fresh meat, there is no need to bring large, heavy coolers that take up unnecessary room when creating a minimalist hunting camp. This cooler is a game-changer.

Other Essential Gear for Camp
In addition to these must-have products, here are a few other items that can enhance your turkey or deer camp experience or be useful when camping with family and friends throughout the summer. Like my camp hatchet, many of these items have been added to the list because they were needed at one time or another while camping, and I did not have them. Over the years, my essential camping list has been refined many times.

Quality Headlamp or Flashlight – Essential for navigating in the dark, tracking blood trails, and working around camp at night. A compact light, such as the Cyclops Trio 300, provides brightness that can be worn while keeping your hands free.

Comfortable Camp Chair – A sturdy chair like the Muddy Director’s Chair provides a much-needed relaxing spot after a long day in the woods, yet it doesn’t take up space when packing. While camping with friends during our annual turkey camp or at a much-anticipated deer camp in the fall, my fondest memories are sitting around the campfire and visiting with family and friends.

Portable Power Bank – Keep your phone, GPS, and other electronic gear charged when off the grid. While I love the quiet time and break from the everyday world when hunting and camping, having access to phones and other electronics provides a sense of safety. Plus, having our phones charged and ready when it’s time to take photos with a gobbler or mature buck is always a good idea. SOGs AH-1 flashlight is a great option.

First Aid Kit – Accidents can happen, so always have a well-stocked first-aid kit on hand. My essential rubber tote will always contain a first-aid kit.

Fire Starter Kit – Having my Cold Steel ax is essential for gathering wood, but it’s useless without a method to start a fire. Matches, lighters, or a ferro rod ensure you can quickly ignite a fire for warmth and cooking. See SOGs Flint for a compact fire starting item.

By outfitting your turkey or deer camp with the right gear, you’ll be better prepared for whatever the hunt throws your way. With gear such as Cold Steel’s knives, hatchet, and the Muddy Outdoors’ soft cooler, you’ll have the tools needed for a comfortable and successful camp experience with memories that last a lifetime.
